In many cases, the word mammoplasty is associated with breast augmentation procedures, but breast reduction surgery also falls under the category of mammoplasty.
Why have breast reductions surgery?
There are usually more reasons for wanting breast reduction surgery compared to those for breast augmentation surgery.
For some of you, we know that you may worry that the size of your breasts is out of proportion with the rest of your figure, making you feel self-conscious. Having overly large breasts can also have a considerable effect on the style of clothing you wear, whether you wear a swimsuit or bikini at the beach or, it can literally limit the availability of clothing sizes to suit your body’s shape.
We also perform a good number of breast reductions surgeries here at Maccenta Istanbul for medical reasons, principally to alleviate back problems caused by excessive weight of mammary glands.
Whether it is simply the aging process or after having babies, larger-than-normal breasts can lose their shape and begin to droop, which once again can create feelings of self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery can not only solve the problem of sagging breasts, but if performed sooner than later can be beneficial to the success of the breast reduction surgery, as opposed to the alternative of mastopexy (breast lifting), which is performed when breasts sag excessively.
Unless for genuine medial reasons, we will not usually consider performing breast reduction surgery on any woman under 18 years of age.
What is involved with breast reduction surgery?
The day before the surgery takes place you will have a full consultation with the surgeon to discuss what you are looking to achieve from the surgery.
Following the consult, you will have a series of radiological evaluations, including a mammography and ultrasound.
The surgery will be performed under general anaesthetic and will last between two and four hours depending on the level of reduction required, followed by an overnight stay in the hospital.
If you have any questions you would like to ask before booking your breast reduction procedure with us, please get in contact and we will be happy to provide you with all the answers you need.
If you have travelled from afar and have opted an all-inclusive package, you will be collected from your hotel and taken to the hospital for your procedure and, once finished, you will be driven back to your hotel as part of our all-inclusive service.
Post-operative care for breast reduction surgery
Unlike breast augmentation surgery, breast reduction surgery requires longer-term post-operative care as it is a more invasive form of surgery.
Over the following four days you will receive follow-up appointments with your surgeon for check-ups to ensure that the operation has gone well and that there is no sign of post-operative infection.
Immediately after the operation, a drain is inserted into the wound for 24-48 hours to release any fluid build-up. This drain is easily and painlessly removed.
You are advised not to return to work for at least one week after surgery, providing the nature of your work is ‘sedate’ and does not involve any physical activity.
A medical support bra (provided) should be worn for the first four weeks after the operation. During this period, care should be taken to avoid any strenuous body movement involving your arms or upper torso, especially lifting. Brisk walking is recommended during this period to maintain your general health.
Light activities can be resumed after six weeks, and life should return to normal within a one-to-three-month period, when all swelling and bruising should also have disappeared.
Six months after surgery your breasts should have settled into their final post-operative shape.
